Death toll in north-east Delhi violence rises to 53

Two new videos emerge of mob targeting cops

Update : 06 Mar 2020, 05:01 PM

The death toll in the violence in north-east Delhi violence has gone up to 53, hospital officials said on Thursday.

At least 44 deaths have been reported from Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital and five from Ram Manohar Lohia, thee at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital and one at Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, reports The Times of India.

“Around 298 patients have been treated so far at GTB and around 100 have gunshot injuries,” said an official.

Meanwhile, two new mobile videos have emerged showing the mayhem in the Chand Bagh area during riots on February 24.

The videos show a mob of over 2,000 anti-CAA protesters attacking badly outnumbered policeman, throwing stones at them and even firing, as they are huddled over the divider, trying to escape the fury of the mob.

This is the incident in which head constable Ratan Lal was shot dead while DCP Amit Sharma was critically injured, along with ACP Anuj Kumar and a dozen other cops. These clips show several women to be part of the mob.

These will help cops in identifying the rioters. The cyber cell will use special software to enhance quality of the images and get them verified by a forensic lab.

The clashes began over a citizenship law that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government introduced in December providing a path to Indian citizenship for six religious groups from neighbouring countries - but not Muslims.

Critics say the law is discriminatory and comes on top of other measures such as withdrawal of autonomy for Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir that has deepened disquiet about the future of India's 200 million Muslims.

Critics of the government however blamed the violence on members of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was trounced in local Delhi elections at the beginning of the month. The BJP has denied the allegations.

The violence morphed into street battles between Hindu and Muslim groups with the police largely ineffective in ending the violence.
