West Bengal continues to see surge in Covid-19 cases

Coronavirus infections in West Bengal are on the rise with the neighbouring Indian state reporting 20,377 cases on Wednesday, the highest since the outbreak of the disease last year.

The number of total cases now stands at over 1.05 million, reports Indian media quoting the health authorities.

Death toll in the state climbed to 12,728 after 135 new fatalities were reported on Wednesday.

West Bengal currently has 128,684 active Covid-19 cases, with 911,705 people having recovered from the infectious disease so far.

India is currently facing its deadliest spell of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The country recorded more than 4,000 Covid-19 deaths for a second straight day on Thursday, while infections stayed below 400,000 for a fourth day, as reported by Reuters.

According to health ministry data, India had 362,727 new Covid-19 infections over the preceding 24 hours till Thursday morning while deaths climbed by 4,120.

With this, the country’s tally of infections and deaths rose to 23.7 million and 258,317, respectively.
